"If you pay peanuts; you will get monkeys".

Dear All,

"If you pay peanuts; you will get monkeys". This proverb is very much being understood by the sixth pay commission. This was a long due. The government employees truly deserve the hike. However, the babus and PSUs should be made accountable for their duties, orelse they will remain a white elephant forever. The productivity and performance has to improve drastically.

Recently, some of the talented officers left their government jobs and accepted some lucrative offers from Reliance and Bharti. This hike in salary may work as a panacea to attract the best talents to join government sectors. It should act as a hindrance to continual exodus to corporates. But I don't think it will control corruption and their lethargic attitude as it is an attitudinal problem.

I believe the media is blowing the hike out of proportion. If we analyse the report, there is again unequal distribution among different cadres. The creamy layer IAS officers are best benefited and the mid level officials are the sufferers. This hike of 40% is happening after a decade, whereas a 15-20% hike in salary is a regular feature in private sectors. The salary hike is just an eye wash. The defence service has been given a raw deal. We should not forget that the national custodians are deprived of basic necessities like decent accommodation, communication, entertainment, electricity and even proper toilets. The field area allowance is not adequate for the soldiers.

Now the other side of the story, How the ex-chequer is going to take this brunt of hike in salary? This craze for frequent and unwarranted wage hikes would have been prevented if the government had taken necessary early action to control inflation. Even it will have a spillover effect in state level. The state level employees may also demand a hike and create a chaotic situation.

In fact there are reports like Geeta Krishnan report which have stated that many Government departments have become non functional in the changed scenario of economic reforms and may be abolished. This report is gathering dust in the Finance Ministry. It should be taken out and implemented immediately.so that the increase in salaries to Government servants does not burden the common man and a lean and clean administration is there to serve the nation.Orelse the tax payers of India won't be comfortable taking care of the hiked salaries of many an inefficient, incompetent and corrupt central government employees.
