A Taj Mahal in Brussels?
New Delhi, Feb 20 (PTI) Belgians will get a chance to see the Taj Mahal as the 17th century monument of love will be brought alive on sand by noted artist Sudarshan Patnaik, who says he wants to do it for French President Nicolas Sarkozy too.Patnaik will create a replica of the Taj on sand as part of the Asia Fair in Belgium."The replica will be exhibited for two days from February 23 at the community centre De Zandloper in Wemmel in Brussels," Patnaik told PTI from the Belgian capital."It will be a four-dimension replica, 10 ft high and 15 ft wide for which the work is currently underway. It will be ready on February 23," said Patnaik, who will use 30 tonnes of sand and will be assisted by co-artist Manas Kumar Sahoo in his endeavour. The Orissa-based artist, who had so far participated in over 34 such sand sculpture events, said he has an ambition to create as many as 100 sand Taj Mahals across the globe."Recently French President Sarkozy visited the Taj and said 'see you again'. I want to create it in Paris for him and the French people, if I get a chance." He has already exhibited the replicas of the Shah Jahan-built structure in Berlin and New York during the Incredible India at 60 Festival. The Asia Fair is being organised in Belgium in coordination with the Indian Embassy."Sand is a unique and soft medium, so people like to see this Taj Mahal for a few hours in their cities," he said.Earlier Patnaik had created a black Taj Mahal at Agra on the occasion of 350 years of anniversary of the "monument of love." Dear Sir,
In the ancient past, bidding of the slaves was a common practice. On the basis of a person's health and robustness, they were bought by their masters. The IPL bidding was just the modern version of it.It is sad to know that sportsmen are sold out like commodities.
IPL is a very good marketing gimmick. It is just a business venture to make money. The objective is not to improve the game of cricket in grass root level which is actually the need of the hour.BCCI just wanted to show their rivalry against Kapil Dev & co's ICL.It is also interesting that ICL is having more Indian players who were consistently doing well in Ranji matches,Duleep trophy etc but ignored by the Indian selectors. Thus in frustration, they joined ICL to earn sufficient and be under the guidance of Kapil Dev,Sandip Patil and many more luminaries who were instrumental in winning the World Cup in 1983.
Some corporates like GMR,Reliance,UB group are considering it as a brand building exercise rather. However, I believe that they should have followed the footsteps of a HUL which is running a Operation Shakti.HUL successfully enhanced it's market share in rural areas and also enhanced it's brand equity by helping the SHGs who were struggling for their bread and butter.Even HUL generated revenue but may be some percentage of it was atleast shared with the community people.
If we analyse the bidding results,it is hard to difficult to believe that a player of Adam Gilchrist's calibre was sold out at a lower price than Dhoni.Being an Indian,I am happy but as a sports enthusiatic, may not agree with it.More than sportsmanship, the sex appeal was an important criteria while bidding.
Now,if we make an effort to come out with some positive impact on the society, then may be,more youth will be influenced by this and will definitely consider being a cricketer rather than being a manager, teacher or a
banker. But the problem is that all good coaches, physical trainers are either part of ICL or IPL.Thus they will be running short of mentors who will enhance their skillsets further. This will lead to dearth of quality inputs in the grassroot level.
Some sportsmen are also ignoring their assignments with their own country and are grabbing these smart money making opportunities in both hands. This is not a good sign to the sports fraternity.Still hope for the best however be prepared for the worst.
Regards,
Mr.Bay Leaf
